Football finance expert Dr Rob Wilson, who is professor of economics at Sheffield Business School, was left unimpressed with Chelsea’s strategy in the transfer window since new owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have taken charge of the club.

The Blues have spent more than £1billion in the last three transfer windows, which has been widely criticised.

“Chelsea's strategy of handing players eight-year contracts is hugely risky, it's been done deliberately to maximise the investment and acquisition of other players in order to amortise those player contracts so they will fit under the FFP regulations,” Wilson said while speaking to Saxo.

"It's a massive gamble. Mudryk has been handed an eight-year contract, and he has reduced in value since his acquisition significantly. They probably overpaid for him originally and he hasn't reached the performance metrics set for him. That's not to say he won't over the next four years, but the trajectory doesn't suggest otherwise.

"Now he is almost untransferable in similar fashion to Harry Maguire at Manchester United. He has a big salary, similar to Alexis Sanchez, and you can't move them off your books because clubs don't want them at the wages they are or you have to pay them to leave. It's incredible risky.

"Also, it's correct to say that if it was revolutionary logic, other clubs would have done it too by now. Without offending Chelsea fans, they are not the biggest team in the league and they haven't got the most talented board and haven't had in successive years. If the likes of Manchester City, Man Utd and Liverpool are not amortising contracts over seven to 10 years, you can rest assured it's not necessarily the best thing to do.

"But on that note, stacking up transfer payments like Man Utd have done is also not that sensible!"

Despite the huge spending, Chelsea have been unable to do consistently well on the field in the recent past. Multiple managerial changes have also not positively impacted the fortunes of the Blues.

Chelsea are currently in 14th place on the Premier League table with five points after six games.
